Questlove, mastermind von The Roots, denkt laut darüber nach, ob Hip Hop immer noch „cool“ ist. In einer Essay-Serie (!) auf vulture.com, einer Webseite des New York Magazines, geht er der ernsten Frage nach ob Hip Hop als Musik noch relevant ist.
Seine Position: Die Allgegenwärtigkeit von Hip Hop in der westlichen Alltagskultur führt dazu, dass die ursprüngliche Idee dahinter unsichtbar wird. Einst das ‚Sprachrohr der Unterdrückten‘ (Don’t push me cuz I’m close to tha edge/ I’m tryin not to lose my head/ It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from goin under) nun nurmehr bedeutungslose Konsum- & Ego-Rhymes? „It’s a comedown for a music that was, only a little while back, devoted to reflecting the experience of real people and, through that reflection, challenging the power structure that produces inequality and disenfranchisement“.
Die Kritik ist nicht neu, kam aus den eigenen Reihen jedoch selten so eloquent daher. Und es darf ruhig mehr als einmal darüber nachgedacht werden: Hat Hip Hop sein Cool verspielt? „American hip-hop is usually based on imitation, and it is meant to produce artists who are users of the existing tradition, not creators. And because of that, black culture in general — which has defaulted into hip-hop — is no longer perceived as an interesting vanguard, as a source of potential disruption or a challenge to the dominant“.
